How to size a pendant
Over a dining table: the bottom of the pendant should sit 75–90cm above the table top. The pendant itself should be roughly half to two-thirds the width of the table. For a 1.6m table, a 60–80cm pendant or a cluster of 3 small ones at varying heights.
Over a kitchen island: 70–85cm above the worktop. For a long island, two or three matching pendants spaced evenly look more considered than one large one.
In a stairwell: the bottom of the pendant should sit at first-floor eye level (roughly the height of the upper landing rail).
Materials and finishes
Linen drum pendants give the softest, most diffuse light — best for dining and bedrooms. Paper or rice-paper pendants reference Japanese design and add a sculptural moment for very little money. Stoneware and ceramic pendants are heavier, more permanent — best when wired to a fixed point.
