The Scandi approach to a table

A Scandi table isn't fussy. It's a wooden board, a single ceramic jug holding tap water, three stoneware bowls of food, a stack of linen napkins. The pieces are quiet but considered — matte over glossy, stoneware over fine china, wood and marble over decorative ceramic.

What makes a Scandi table feel calm is the restraint. Three serving pieces, not seven. One pitcher, not two. Tones that sit within a 3–4 colour palette (cream, sand, soft sage, deep clay) so nothing fights for attention. A board, a bowl, a jug — and the meal does the rest.

Building a versatile Scandi tableware collection

If you're starting from scratch, we'd suggest: one large oiled-wood serving board (35cm+), one mid-size stoneware platter, one tall ceramic jug, two stoneware serving bowls (one wide and shallow, one deep), and a stone or marble tray. Six pieces that cover everything from a slow Sunday roast to a Tuesday-night cheese board with a glass of wine.
